Assignment 3: Report and Prototype

In the initial stage of prototyping, I was not at all certain how to customise a bike frame, while keeping in mind the various constraints which are needed for the frame to be manufacturable, and safe. In preliminary design plans, I was looking to use 3D shape grammars; defining pipe shapes, connection points as well as the various constraints.
After seeing the punching design tool in fluid forms, I wanted to create something similar to this where, in a 3D view, a user can freely form an initial… Continue

Assignment 3 - Types of Frames (refresh).

Before any design work can be done, the user must choose the frame type to suit thier needs. Here are the different types:

The Sportster Frame
The sportster frame is used when making Sportster motorcycles. Sportster frames have different types as well. For instance the Hardtail Chassis is a sportster frame that allows for the chopper to have large tires on it. This is the type used in the modelled frame.

Assignment 3 - Chopper frame mock up

I am currently trying to figure out a way to customise a chopper frame. I feel that it is important to consider multiple view when designing a bike frame, looking at it from a front or side view, I feel would restrict the depth of customisation of the frame.

I feel the best way to design the frame virtually, is to do so as many professionals in the industry do, in a 3 dimensional view. For this reason, it would be too complicated to use processing or context free for the design work. I have dec… Continue
