Final Report + Prototypes

Report The mass customisation prototype system I produced was giving customers the ability to design their own bodyboard. This includes the basic template, dimensions, board specifications, design and the ability to personalize their board. For this assignment I’ve concentrated on the personalizing section of my prototype system, in particular the ability for customers to design their own graphic for their slick. So once the customer has completed the first four sections of designing their boa… Continue

Grammar 4

i didn't have to add much to this at all. A bit of accidental designing was used but i think it looks awesome, i don't feel any more needs to be added to it.

Grammar number 1

ok here's the first of about 5 images my customer's will get to choose from. If they like this image then they'll click into this and the grammar randomiser will produce several variations of this particular design and will keep doing so until the customer finds a desired design. Theoretically if i was to produce this in real life i would want about 25 - 50 separate designs but they take a lot of time to construct so i think i'll stick to about 5 roughly for my assignment but i'll see how i go.… Continue

Getting there..

So the more images i add to my grammar the cooler its starting to look, i think a design grammar that randomly produces multiple images is close to what i'll end up with. Here's a sample, but i still want to build on this considerably...

Experimentation

I thought i would experiment with creating text within the grammar. I do want to include text into my design but i'm still unsure whether i want to do it within the grammar or externally and letting the customer choose font type, font size, placement etc. This is what i came up with...

How to approach this...

I really like the look and style of the examples i've shown and definitely think it would appeal to the majority of body boarders, but when it comes to creating this with a design grammar, i question my chances. From what i've seen, and i've pretty much gone through every grammar in the gallery on the context free web site, the images produced are a bit to neat, or maybe lonesome. Sure they look cool, but when it comes to puttting a graphic onto the slick of a bodyboard I don't feel they're enou… Continue

3rd assignment research

After looking at various bodyboard magazines and websites i have found a trend towards a scrapbook/random doodling type style (something you might see in a teenagers school book), targetting the audience directly. There wasn't much style within the content of these magazines/websites, but within the advertisements (e.g. clothing, boards, gear etc) this style was prominent. Personally, i quite like this style and think it would definitely appeal to the vast majority of bodyboarders living within… Continue

Assignment 2 - Report

The computational system/tool I’ve designed for customising bodyboards is broken up into 5 different areas – Basic Template, Dimensions, Board Specifications, Design, and Personalise. It begins with the Basic Template. This involves the curve of the board (for Prone, Dropknee, or Versatile riding) and the material of the core (Dow or polypropelene). Also in this section, it will ask for the customers height and weight as this is quite important to the riding quality. The next section is the Dim… Continue

Assignment 1 - Report

The application of mass customization that I’m interested in is the area of designing your own bodyboard. Although there are already existing companies that do allow individuals to customize bodyboards, I feel the options provided are limited and the finished product is not as personal as it potentially could be. Above this though is the problem of not being able to see a model of your bodyboard design before it is produced, giving customers only one chance at picking the right combination of el… Continue
