Well during the last lecture I have to say that I realised my mass customisation tool lacked some - finess. Specifically the example of Cate Reas's dresses, caused me to realise that I was providing the user with to many options for cutomisation; and while thats one way of working it's not a good method for; repeat business, image, style, recognisability, creating a brand. Her dresses simply use the individual and unique designs of Casey Reas on simple dresses but they are imediately recognisable. I used this as inspiration for my customisation tool for Wedding Dresses; Users can now create the basic design of their dress; the material, the colour, the size (made to fit their specific size) and their Lace; a unique design developed by the user through the use of an evolutionary design tool, the users then also use parametric design to alter different aspects of the patterned material they have created.
To allow the users to design their own lace first required some investigation into the creation of lace;
Traditionally lace was made by hand but today 90% of lace is manufactured by machine thanks to the invention of the
"Jacquard attachment to lace machines that made possible the duplication of practically every pattern of lace made by hand" (
http://www.oldandsold.com/articles23/dressing-well-68.shtml) After further investigation I found that there are new machines which provide LCD displays, and software programs which allow designers to create lace designs efficiently. By some jump in technology and crossing platforms I believe it is concievable that a user can create a design on the computer which is then sent to these designers and translated (either computationally, or manually) into this system.

The context free code which I have used to generate these lace designs is as below:
Design One: (Without Variables);

The storyboard of my Mass Customisation project is below:
(may need to be viewed at 100% as there is walk through text).

That is my prototype for Mass Customisation of a Wedding Dress.
Cheers. Happy Hols.
