My mass customization is about printing service that allows users to customize their own printed work. I assume that not everyone is good at editing, using professional softwares, such as Indesign, CorelDraw. The target users don’t have to know a lot design skill. They can simply follow the instruction to do arrangement. Besides that, the website provides simply tools to users doing aesthetic design.
As above picture shows, Publisher provides user individual account, allow them to save/manage their work, and occasional visitors are welcome.
There are four main steps. The first step is bout import data. There are two options, transfer and upload. If a user wants/her blog post, he/she just need to transfer data by RSS. The two options can be combined, transfer first then upload additional files.
The second step is cover customization, including choose of texture and book size. Registered user can always step backward during process, previous work is saved automatically. The price of each choice is displayed and counted by system, when whole process done, total cost would come up.
Let’s assume above option is selected. The LHS is rough preview of cover. The RHS picture indicate area which can be further customize.
So far, there is not much highly creative customization. Up to graphic design, there is option about generating pattern. I assume that there’s an online context free kind tool is provided. It requires users have basic coding skill. They can type in their own codes or work on given sample codes.
Next step is to design book content. Firstly, users choose paper type, size and binding way etc.
System allows users to design background of each page. They can choose any colour and picture they want. Let’s say book content base on blog post. System first asks user how many posts in a book page. For example, they choose one post per page and blank background, so the page is exactly like the post. Users can also upload word file to Publisher. Each page can be as same as original file or to be further designed.
